Common questions
The connection fails immediately
- Verify host, port and username in the profile; try the same parameters with
ssh user@host -p portfrom Terminal to isolate the issue. - If the server only allows key authentication, make sure the profile uses Public Key auth and points at the correct private key file.
- Corporate firewalls and VPNs frequently block port 22 — try from another network to confirm.
“Host key changed” warning
SSHMount warns you when a server's key differs from the one you previously trusted. If you (or your provider) reinstalled or migrated the server, remove the old entry from the Known Hosts manager and reconnect. If nothing changed on the server, do not accept the new key — it could indicate a man-in-the-middle attack; verify with your server administrator first.
My key file can't be read
- SSHMount supports OpenSSH-format keys, including encrypted keys with passphrase. Modern types (ed25519, RSA 4096+) are recommended.
- Because the app is sandboxed, select the key through the file picker in the profile editor so macOS grants access to it.
The SFTP volume doesn't appear
- Check that “Mount as Finder Volume” is enabled in the profile editor (Additional Info section).
- The volume mounts right after the SSH connection is established and Finder opens on it automatically; mounts live under
~/Library/Application Support/SSHMount/Mounts/. - The server must allow the SFTP subsystem (almost all OpenSSH servers do by default).
Where are my profiles and credentials stored?
Profiles are stored in a local database on your Mac; passwords and passphrases live only in the macOS Keychain. Nothing is synced to any cloud. See the Privacy Policy for the details.
How do I completely remove SSHMount?
- Quit the app and delete it from the Applications folder.
- Delete
~/Library/Application Support/SSHMount/to remove profiles, logs and mount points. - Optionally open Keychain Access and remove any items created by SSHMount (search for “sshmount” or “sshtun”).
